Copa del Derby de Kentucky
El 03 de Mayo de 2.008 se celebró, en el hipódromo de Churchill Downs, la reunión que incluía el 134 Derby de Kentucky y que se corrió en el 10º lugar del programa. La prueba contó con 20 participantes entre los que destacaban un potro, Big Brown. En esta carrera también sobresalía una yegua (la única de la carrera), Eight Belles; hecho este muy infrecuente ya que hasta ese momento solo habian participado en el Derby 39 yeguas en las 133 ediciones anteriores.
Eigth Belles venía de hacer historia al adjudicarse, el 18 de febrero de ese año, los 50.000 $ de la prestigiosa carrera Martha Washington Stakes que se corre sobre la milla en el hipódromo de Oaklawn Park Racetrack en Hot Springs, Arkansas. Esta yegua fué la primera de su género en ganar la citada carrera desde su primera edición en 1.979 y su victoria se produjo por 13,5 cuerpos de distancia sobre el segundo clasificado.

En el vídeo se puede apreciar claramente la superioridad de Eight Belles sobre el resto de los participantes, su forma de ganar impresionó tanto que la abría posibilidades para poder afrontar carreras mas importantes y sobre una mayor distancia.
El Derby de Kentucky, un Grupo I que forma parte de la "Triple Corona Americana", estaba dotado con un premio para el primer clasificado de 1.451.800 $ mas una copa de oro valorada en 90.000 $, cuya imágen podéis ver al principio de esta entrada del blog.
Big Brown era uno de los caballos de la carrera que contaba con mas adeptos. A los 2 años ganó la única carrera en la que participó, una carrera para no ganadores dotada con 37.800 $ celebrada en el Saratoga Race Course sobre hierba y la distancia de una milla. Esta carrera la ganó por mas de 11 cuerpos.
Ya a tres años, Big Brown corrió su primera carrera en el hipódromo de Gulfstream Park, sobre tierra y la distancia de una milla. También resultó ganador, esta vez por 12 cuerpos de distancia.
El 28 de marzo de 2.008 Big Brown abordó la mila y un octavo del Florida Derby que se celebró en el mismo hipódromo de su anterior victoria, el Gulfstream Park. Esta carrera la ganó por una distancia de 5 cuerpos y fué la última antes de presentarse en el Kentucky Derby.
El Kentucky Derby lo ganó Big Brown de manera cómoda por mas de cuatro cuerpos sobre Eight Belles. La yegua corrió muy bien y ese segundo puesto fue muy celebrado por sus seguidores.

Pero, de repente, surgió la tragedia :
a pocos metros de pasar la línea de llegada, Eight Belles sufrió un percance, la yegua se paró de forma brusca inclinándose hacia adelante, el jockey pudo desmontar de su cabagadura y se quedó estático delante de la yegua; esta se había fracturado sus dos manos y estaba postrada y dolorida sobre la pista de Churchill Downs.

El servicio veterinario del hipódromo acudió rápidamente al lugar del suceso y, minutos mas tarde, dado el alcance de las lesiones, decidieron sacrificarla.
Se había perdido una gran yegua en entrenamiento y, sin duda, una gran madre de futuros campeones.

But, suddenly, came the tragedy:

Racecourse veterinary service went quickly to the scene and, minutes later, given the extent of injuries, decided to sacrifice her.
