Paula se va (la mujer en el turf Español)

En Abril de 1.980, hace ahora 30 años, se publicó en el número 5 de la revista "El Hipódromo" un magnífico artículo-entrevista que llevaba por título : "Paula se va".

Se trataba, nada mas y nada menos, de la despedida de una de las mas importantes mujeres jockeys que han existido en España : Paula Elizalde



En aquella época era muy poco frecuente ver mujeres montando caballos de carreras como jockeys o aprendices. Normalmente su presencia era habitual en carreras reservadas a "amazonas y gentlement" pero muy pocas frecuentaban handicaps o carreras de condición.

Paula llegó a ganar mas de 40 carreras, muchas de ellas con los caballos que Ramón Mendoza y Jesús Méndez la confiaban.

Recuerdo de esa época a grandes amazonas como Maribel Baíllo o Conchita Mínguez.

Hoy en día (Abril de 2.010), la presencia de la mujer sigue siendo muy escasa en nuestros hipódromos. Hay grandes jockeys femeninos : Nieves García, Claudine Cazalis ... grandes promesas : Lucía Gelabert, Sandra Bermejo, Elena de las Doblas ... y grandes entrenadoras : Augelli, Imaz, Valenti ... Pero creo que la presencia femenina en nuestro turf es muy escasa. ¿Porque?

Paula is leaving (woman in the Spanish turf)

In April 1980, 30 years ago, was published in the May number of the magazine "El Hipódromo" an excellent article-interview was titled: "Paula is leaving."

It was, nothing more and nothing less than the departure of one of the most important women jockeys that have existed in Spain: Paula Elizalde.

At that time it was very rare to see women riding horses racing as jockeys and apprentices. Usually their presence was common in races reserved for "Amazons and gentlement" but very few attended handicaps or racing condition.
Paula went on to win over 40 races, many of them with horses that Ramon Mendoza and Jesús Méndez trusted.

I remember at that time to large amazons as Maribel Baillo or Conchita Minguez.

Today (April 2010), the presence of women is still very scarce in our racecourses. There are great female jockeys: Nieves Garcia, Claudine Cazalis ... great promises: Lucia Gelabert, Sandra Bermejo, Elena de las Doblas ... and great coaches, Augelli, Imaz, Valenti ... But I think the female presence in our turf is very low. Why?
