http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6qUCO_bLns

----

Horse races are, without doubt, a sports event that brings together a large number of attractive aspects to the viewer. The colorful, synchronization between man and horse betting, sports rivalry, awards and honors for owners, jockeys, trainers ...

All this raises a great expectation and thrills the fans at racetracks around the world for the beauty and excitement. That is increased if, for years, there are two competing horses nobly for election as the best.

Perhaps the best example of this occurred between 1.977 and 1.978, its protagonists and rivals were called Alydar and Affirmed.

These two horses fought 10 times in their lifes, the first on 15 June 1.977 on the prize Youthful on Belmont Racecourse and the last on August 19, 1.978 in the prize Travers on Saratoga Racecourse. In this award we have found the right image that shows a cut of the race program. Affirmed was ridden by Laffit Pincay Jr.. and Alydar by his regular jockey, Jorge Velasquez.

Affirmed won the race but was distanced in second place for molesting and Alydar who won it in his latest confrontation served.

The video of the race can be seen in this link :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6qUCO_bLns

At 2 years fought 6 times winning Affirmed 4 races and Alydar the remaining 2.

Affirmed won 7 of the 10 races he faced including the 3 races of 1.978 of the so-called "Triple Crown".

For those uninitiated into the world of horse racing, explain that the "Triple Crown" includes the best races of the United States for horses 3 years old, these races are as follows:

- Kentucky Derby, 1 and 1 / 4 miles (2,01 km) on the sand at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

- Preakness Stakes, 1 and 3 / 16 miles (1,91 km) on the sand of Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore, Maryland.

- Belmont Stakes, 1 and 1 / 2 miles (2,41 km) on the sand Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.

Two years Alydar completed its season with 5 wins and 4 second place finishes in 10 starts at the track. Was beaten by Affirmed in the Youthful, Hopeful, Futurity, and Laurel Futurity.

Affirmed finished the year with 9 outputs of which 7 were wins and 2 second places. He was awarded the Eclipse Award as the best 2 years of 1.977. This award was received, as best 2-year-old horses as important as Man o 'Wara (1.919), Hail to Reason (1.960), Riva Ridge (1.971), Secretariat (1.972), Seattle Slew (1.976) and Spectacular Bid (1.978).

When they reached the classical age, 3 years, each horse took a different route to prepare the "Triple Crown". Alydar chose the "path of Florida"and won the Flamingo Stakes, Florida Derby and Blue Grass Stakes, this for 13 bodies. Affirmed campaigned was in California and won the San Felipe Handicap, Santa Anita Derby and Hollywood Derby.

And again these two extraordinary horses were found, this time in the Kentucky Derby, the first "leg" of the American "Triple Crown". Each with its style, Alydar was a horse that likes to run late to present his shot down the stretch, however Affirmed corer used in a point or in the first place, as happened in this race.
Alydar took to the track as a favorite in betting (1,20 to 1) and Affirmed the second seed (1,80 to 1). Affirmed was placed third in the race and put in first place going into the final straight. Alydar came from ninth place to try to overtake his great rival, but his effort only enabled him to finish second at 1,5 bodies.

This is video of that race :
In the Preakness Stakes Affirmed came out as crowd favorite, not only for his victory in the Kentucky Derby but also for his style of running pointer thing that favored by the characteristics of Pimlico Race Course.

Affirmed with only 7 participants took command from the start, in sixth position being Alydar something off. Near the last corner and could see a breakthrough of Alydar by recovering many jobs overseas. Late on the final turn forced the pace by Alydar lane 3 to go to his rivals entering the stretch just a body could be seen Affirmed although the latter was only accompanied by his jockey while Alydar was very beer-making.

The arrival was very exciting with both horses and jockeys to deploy every effort to post where Affirmed kept a neck over his opponent.

This is video of this great race :

Then came the last of his fighting in the "Triple Crown", the Belmont Stakes, for many the most beautiful final that has been ever in the history of this event.

If the Derby distance separated them was a length and a half, a neck in the Preakness, Alydar in the Belmont came to a head in a thrilling Affirmed stretch. In this race the two horses were neck and neck for about 800 mts.

This is the video:

At that point Affirmed was crowned as the 11th and last horse winning the American "Triple Crown" and Alydar became turf history as the only horse that finished second in three races that compose it.

The last race for Affirmed in which he participated was the Jockey Club Gold Cup from Spectacular Bid. The race had only 4 participants but, nevertheless, proved to be very exciting :

The data on the careers of these two horses are spectacular :

Affirmed's trainer spoke several times on Alydar, his great rival :

"Affirmed is much better than Secretariat or any other Triple Crown winner because only he to deal with Alydar"

"Alydar could have been a Triple Crown winner if he was born another year"

Where to comfortably beat Alydar Affirmed was in the stud as a stallion, despite his death occurred in 1.990, eleven years earlier than its rival. Alydar's death occurred when he broke a leg in an accident that still remains unclear and is part of the scandal that led to the bankruptcy of Calumet Farm (left in 1.990 years of death) where he was held. In his 11 seasons as a stallion, Alydar 706 foals father who ran the 520 with a total prize winnings of $ 59.105.824 which represents an average of $ 113.665
Affirmed began his career as a stallion with a fee of $ 30.000 in Jonabell Farm in Kentucky until his death on January 12, 2.001 when he was killed. He fathered 808 children of those who ran 560 with a gain of $ 36.238.158 which equates to an average of $ 64.711 very inferred to which the sons of Alydar won.

This is a brief summary of the most noble and competitive confrontation occurred in the history of horse races between two of the greatest.

Eight Belles y Big Brown, la hiel y la miel en la misma carrera - Eight Belles and Big Brown the bile and honey in the same race

----

On May 03, 2.008 was held in the Churchill Downs racetrack, the meeting included the 134 Kentucky Derby and ran in 10th place in the program. The test included 20 participants, including highlighting a horse, Big Brown. This race had also a mare (the one in the race), Eight Belles, made this very rare and until then, had only participated in the Derby 39 mares in the previous 133.
Eigth Belles came to make history by winning on 18 February of that year, the prestigious $ 50,000 Martha Washington Stakes race that runs over the mile at Oaklawn Park Racecourse Racetrack in Hot Springs, Arkansas. This mare was the first of its kind to win the race cited since its first edition in 1.979 and his victory came by 13,5 bodies apart on the runner.

This is video of the victory of Eight Belles in the Martha Washington Stakes :
The video clearly shows the superiority of Eight Belles on the rest of the participants, how they win so much that she opened possibilities to deal with major races and over a greater distance.

The Kentucky Derby, a Group I, which is part of the "Triple Crown" was endowed with a prize for the winner of $ 1,451,800 plus a gold cup valued at $ 90,000, whose image you can see the principle of this blog entry.

Big Brown was one of the horses in the race that had more fans. At 2, he won the only race in which he participated, for not winning a race endowed with $ 37,800 held at the Saratoga Race Course on grass and the distance of a mile. This race was won by more than 11 bodies.

Already three years, Big Brown ran his first race at Gulfstream Park Racetrack, on land and the distance of a mile. Also the winner, this time by 12 bodies away.

On 28 March 2008 Big Brown addressed the miracle and an eighth of the Florida Derby was held in the same race track from his previous victory, the Gulfstream Park. This race was won by a distance of 5 bodies and was the last before appearing in the Kentucky Derby.

The Kentucky Derby was won by Big Brown in a comfortable way for more than four bodies on Eight Belles. The horse ran very well and that second place was much celebrated by his followers.

This is video of that Derby :

But, suddenly, came the tragedy:

spend a few meters from the finish line, Eight Belles suffered a setback, the horse stopped abruptly, leaning forward, the jockey may dismount from his horse and remained static in front of her, this had fractured her two hands and was bedridden and in pain on the track at Churchill Downs.

In this short video you can see what happened:

Racecourse veterinary service went quickly to the scene and, minutes later, given the extent of injuries, decided to sacrifice her.

It had lost a great horse in training and, without doubt, a great mother of future champions.

1924 DERBY LONGER VERSION

----

Sansovino (1.921 - 1.940) was a extraordinary big strong colt who won the 1.924 Epsom Derby with Tommy Weston as jockey. His victory came six bodies on the other participants and in a very muddy as it had been raining for several days before the race. In total, Sansovino (a son of that extraordinary broodmare Gondolette) won six races including the Gimcrack Stakes, the Derby and the Prince of Wales's Stakes.

In 1924 the Earl of Derby's horse Sansovino won the Derby.
It was the first time that a holder of the title had won the race which his family founded.
In 1933 Lord Derby won again with Hyperion.

Tommy Weston, jockey, was very nervous, with 21 years had the chance to win an Epsom Derby as he rode a horse with a good chance of success and, moreover, was the favorite. These nerves don't let him realize that, by buttoning the jacket black, one of them, namely the second from the top, was covered with the white scarf that the jockey was wearing around his neck. By winning the horse, Tommy thought that white button had been lucky, and since then, the button is a part of the colors of Lord Derby. In the above photo you can clearly see the white button above the jacket by Tommy Weston.

The video that we offer, more than 7 minutes long, is of exceptional quality for the time, the images show the run, the arrival of the king and many details about the unique environment of the time despite the bad weather. The film is edited with images from many cameras and even front there is a repetition of the arrival in slow motion, a luxury for 1.924

Emily Wilding Davison, muerte en las carreras - Emily Wilding Davison, death at the races

----

Emily Davison (1.872-1.913) was an active British suffragettes who fought for obtaining voting rights for women and their struggle so fierce even took her to jail.

On 04 June 1.913 Emily Wilding Davison decided to go to the Derby at Epsom.

Epsom Derby (Surrey, England) is the most popular event in the UK since 1.780. In this race the best horses compete, non-castrated males, aged 3 to vie for the honor of victory in this classic race and the substantial award in the year 2.009, was 709.625 pounds for the first.

That was the place and time to demonstrate and to point to the crowd and the media covering the event, the claims of the suffragettes to get women the vote.

Emily stood in the central oval race track, particularly in the Tattenham Corner, the critical curve at the end of Derby who decide many races are held there. At that point of travel the horse of King George V, Anmer, had lost many bodies in relation to those who were in the lead, in fact they had made two very different, something unusual in a race. The first of them are way ahead of the second, only 3 horses, in which Anmer was the first.

Emily hit the track and was struck by the king's horse, being without knowledge by the blow, died four days later at the Epsom Cottage Hospital.

Some viewers said their intention was to stop the real horse and hang the flag suffragettes to note their claims. This is actually very unlikely, as is well known to stop a Thoroughbred horse in full career, it is impossible and, given the situation of Emily, on the edge of the track, it is impossible to know where was located the royal horse .

Other opinions state that Emily was just trying to take to the track after the passage of the horses because, at that time, it was tradition to go out there to reach the goal area. Emily is very likely that, while the first group of horses, thought that there was no more to spend.

It was in 1.928 when women in the UK acquiring the right to vote when they turned 21 years old.

In the attached video you can see the tragedy :
