Yatasto, el mejor caballo Argentino de todos los tiempos - Yatasto, the best Argentine horse of all time

En el turf de cualquier país del mundo siempre ha sido muy aventurado comparar caballos de diferentes épocas y mucho mas declarar a uno de ellos como el mejor de todos los tiempos. 

Es muy difícil establecer comparaciones ecuánimes con las que clasificar a diferentes generaciones ya que, para empezar, muchas de ellas no se pudieron enfrentar en las pistas. Además, los resultados de cada carrera son irrepetibles; es decir, si esa misma carrera, con los mismos participantes, pesos, jockeys, cajones de salida, etc ... se celebrase cada semana, es mas que probable que el resultado variaría cada vez, ya que los imponderables como : salida, cruces, estado del terreno, ánimo o moral de caballo, acierto o error del jockey, paso de la carrera, posición de los caballos en la misma, fustazos, fuerza en los braceos, etc ... harían que ese resultado variase con frecuencia.

No obstante, en Argentina, el hecho de tener un mejor caballo de todos los tiempos, ha sido algo que no ha generado la mas mínima duda y que no ha variado desde 1.951, hace ya 60 años. Ese caballo es Yatasto y, para contar brevemente su historia sobre las pistas, os remito a lo que ya se ha escrito en una gran página de internet :

UN GRAN CAMPEON HIPICO : YATASTO

Año 1951, terminaba febrero. En el ambiente hípico, circulaba un dato: el 4 de marzo, en el clásico William Kemmis del hipódromo de San Isidro, iba a debutar un potrillo de 2 años que no podía perder. Bautizado Yatasto, era hijo de Selim Hassan y Yucca; corría por el stud Atenas, de Uruguay.

Era preparado por J. de la Cruz y el jockey Juan Carlos Contreras. Según lo dicho, era favorito de entrada. 1000 mts. en pista de césped y competía contra otros 14. Largó mal, pero fue a buscar a los de adelante y los dejó atrás: al llegar al disco le sacó 3 cuerpos de ventaja al 2º. Gano las 11 que corrió en ese año y la mayoría por amplia ventaja. No desentonaba y verlo disparado era algo festivo, los otros se le quedaban muy atrás. Después de 7 triunfos entró en el cuádruple campeonato y se llevo todos los premios.

El Carlos Pellegrini del 52 fue esperado y solo se hablaba de eso. Apenas se abrió todo, entraron 100.000 almas. Sus rivales: Branding y Sideral. Pero ninguno de ellos era favorito. Branding tomo la punta, 2º Yatasto y 3º Sideral. Pero al llegar a la recta final, Yatasto consigue acercarse, pero Branding retomo la diferencia al toque. Inesperado: cuando era evidente que el crack no tenia para mas, Sideral lo pasa. 1º Branding, 2º Sideral y 3º Yatasto. Pasó a la historia ese GP. No hubo revancha, porque el ganador se lesionó y no volvió. Para 1953, bajo otros dueños, ganó en Maroñas (Uruguay) y todas las carreras corridas en suelo argento, donde pudo dejar atrás a Sideral. ¿Volvía a ser el que era? Parecía, tras batir el récord de 3 millas en 3’ 4’’1/5. Ese sería el ultimo año y terminaría invicto. De 24 corridas, 2 perdidas solamente, lo que “sala” su trayectoria.

Retirado, fue vendido a USA en 1958, y tuvo una descendencia ganadora. Durante años no hubo novedades sobre el, excepto que se supo que para los 70’s sirvio de mestizaje en un establo californiano.

Su campaña en la edad clásica (1.951) fue excepcional, ganó la Cuádruple Corona Argentina imponiéndose en los Grandes Premios Polla de Potrillos, Jockey Club, Nacional Y Carlos Pellegrini. Además se impuso en otros 5 clásicos del calendario Argentino.

Pero llegó 1.952 y Yatasto se dispuso a afrontar un segundo Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini y ese fue el día en que falló, ese día malo que tiene todo gran campeón le llevó a un tercer puesto que dejó boquiabiertos a todos los aficionados :

Aún hoy, aquellos octogenarios aficionados que pudieron ver las victorias de ese extraordinario caballo, narran a las nuevas generaciones lo que les hacía vibrar Yatasto en tantas y tantas tardes de gloria de su juventud que han hecho posible que, después de 60 años, siga siendo considerado como el "Mejor caballo Argentino de todos los tiempos".

A GREAT HORSE CHAMPION: YATASTO

There was no rematch, because the winner was injured and did not return. By 1.953, under other owners, won Maroñas (Uruguay) and all races run in argento floor, where he could leave behind Sidereal. Even today, those octogenarians fans could see the victories of this extraordinaryhorse, tell the younger generation what they rattled Yatasto in so many evenings glory of his youth that have made it possible, after 60 years, remains regarded as the "Best Argentine horse of all time."
